I'm perfectly aware that this LJ exists only to give me access to certain people's "friend's only" posts, and serves no actual function besides giving me an username for that. Still, I find that I have to write something here - to sort of appease the digital gods by fullfilling this web page's primary function.
Or something.
Anyway, lately I've been reading like madman, going through books and online fiction like a lawnmower. For the few who stumble accidentally here, I'll point out that I can read 400 page book in a day, even though I spend most of the day at work. If I have whole day, I can read a whole lot more.
So, yes. I'm fairly fast reader. Not the fastest I know, but I can still go through a lot of text in few months if I want to. For the last month, I have been doing mostly reading - so I am running a bit low on new things to read.
Planescape
Hence, I stumbled upon some
old RPG stuff... Eh, another one of my oddities. I like to read RPG books, especially sourcebooks. The worlds and settings and such fascinate me almost as much as good fiction.
Well, basically they're the same thing, the other one just has a plot.
But what I stumbled upon was the old
Planescape stuff. I'm sure most of you have no idea what the hell I am talking about, but it is a setting for the old AD&D 2nd edition RPG game. While I give about two flips and a zip about the system
(Hate it, actually. Not that I play RPGs that much, I just don't like it even in theory), I ADORE the Planescape setting.
Well, actually, I adore SIGIL. The city of doors. Now that's my kind of place. Dark, gritty, full of death, intrigue and cold hearted bastards. Sounds like my kind of town.
So, I've been reading through them and wishing I could write as well as some of the fiction writers. Sure, I can write. But hey, I have already several dozen artistic and creative endeavors and hobbies going on - so I hardly have time for writing something on top of all that.
No Fantasy Crap, Here
Perhaps the best thing about Planescape is the mood. It's a weird world in the Planescape setting, and anything can be found there. It's not the usual boring Tolkienish
(overrated) fantasy standard shit. It's dark, full of death, bones and amoral people who don't care about you, and only want your jink. It's the Multiverse, berk, and and a blood knows that it ain't worth any amount of jink to get in to the dark of it, or a cutter will go barmy for sure. A sodder is better off trying to kicking the Harmonium to their sodding zills, not that it's a very bright idea, either.
Not to mention the Planescape lingo...
It's one of the few things that stick to your mind when you read through the books. The writers decided to use some old slang words, and invented few themselves to richen the settings. Often this kind of things just come out stupid, but somehow it fits the quirky atmosphere of Sigil like a glove.
I'd recommend for people to read the books, but they're out of the print, and I
seriously doubt anyone but me is weird enough to just read RPG books - instead of playing them.
